On January 17-19, 2012, Kuala Lumpur hosted an international conference on “Global Movement of Moderates: In Pursuit of an Enduring and Just Peace”.
The conference was organized by the Alumni Association of the International Islamic University of Malaysia, supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Government of Malaysia.
The conference aimed at discussing peaceful coexistence, reconciliation and cooperation between peoples, as well as promotion of the idea of rejection from extremism in all its forms and support of moderate, tolerant and peaceful stands in international relations.
A three-day conference has accommodated approximately 400 experts from over 70 countries, including 50 speakers. Among them were the experts of the Center for Political Studies.
Consequently, plenary sessions were devoted to such topics as the dialogue of civilizations, a peaceful resolution of conflicts, prospects for building a new international financial system, human capital development, the role of education in promoting peace and stability, social justice, the interaction of the Islamic world with the West, etc.
The idea of “Global Movement of Moderates” belongs to the Prime Minister of Malaysia Dato’ Sri Mohammad Najib Tun Haji Abdul Razak, who first announced it in 2010 during his speech at the 65th session of UN General Assembly in New York. The basic meaning of the idea is to promote tolerance/temperance in global scale based on the experience of Malaysia, in which people of various races, ethnicities and religions coexist in peace united in maintenance of sustainable peace and social welfare.
The conference appointed senior-level ministries and departments, scientific and analytical structures, international organizations, universities and NGO’s as keynote speakers. An active exchange of views among participants of the conference took place at the end of each session.
Overall, participants recognized the importance of promoting the idea “Global Movement of Moderates” as a counterweight to extremism and various tendencies that lead to a clash of civilizations and instability.
