A number of important developments in the foreign policy of the country were held in the first half of January. In particular, the President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov received Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of National People’s Congress Chen Zhili and the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea Park Hee-tae. The Foreign Ministry of the Republic of Uzbekistan also held meetings with heads of diplomatic missions accredited in Tashkent.

A number of important developments in the foreign policy of the country took place in the second decade of December. In particular, representatives of Japan, Finland, USA, France had a meetings in the Foreign Ministry of the Republic of Uzbekistan. President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov signed a law “On ratification of Convention of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization against terrorism (Yekaterinburg city, 16 June 2009)”, attended a session of the Council of Collective Security of the member-states of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) and summit of Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).

A number of important developments in the foreign policy of the country took place in the first decade of December. In particular, the Uzbek governmental delegations visited Japan and Great Britain. Moreover, a meeting with newly appointed head of the Representative Office of German International Cooperation (GIZ) in Uzbekistan Karl Testensen was held in the Foreign Ministry of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

A number of important developments in the foreign policy of the country took place in the second decade of November. The National Adult Education Forum was organized in Tashkent with the support of UNDP, as well as the meeting of President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov with Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) Margaret Chan at the Oqsaroy residence. In addition, a meeting with newly appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Moldova to Uzbekistan with residence in Kiev Ion Stavila was held in the Foreign Ministry of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

A number of important developments in the foreign policy of the country took place in the second decade of November. An international conference «Alternative methods of dispute resolution as a way of protecting the legitimate interests of individuals and legal entities», the fifth session of cooperation forum «Republic of Korea – Central Asia» which were held in Tashkent can particularly be noted. In addition, a meeting with the UK Assistant Chief of Defense Staff Graham Howard was held in the Foreign Ministry of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

International Round Table “Prospects for Oil and Gas Sector of Central Asia in the Context of Current Global Financial and Economic Processes” ( May 11 2010, Tashkent)

On May 11, the Center for Political Studies jointly with NHC “Uzbekneftegaz” organized an international round table on “Prospects for oil and gas sector of Central Asia in the context of current global financial and economic processes”.

The event was carried out in the framework of the “OGU 2010”, the 14th Uzbekistan International Oil and Gas Conference, organized with the assistance of the I.T.E. Exhibitions & Conferences Ltd. (the United Kingdom) and ITE Uzbekistan.

The main goal of the event was to consider the energy potential of Central Asia and the prospects for its development, taking into account the emergence of new trends in the international financial and economic system.

Local and foreign senior-level experts from research and analytical centers; government departments focusing on the oil and gas industry, economic and energy security, and global politics; and representatives of the diplomatic corps, international organizations and energy companies accredited in Tashkent participated in the round table.

Among participants were representatives of such leading energy corporations and international core organizations as Tethys, PETRONAS, Total, Repsol, “Gazprom zarubezhneftegaz”, Lukoil Overseas Uzbekistan, Sasol, Shlumberger, PLATTS, World Energy Council, International Energy Agency, etc.

The round table consisted of two thematic sessions. The first session was devoted to current tendencies in world economic and financial system, topical issues of developing global energy, taking into account new geopolitical trends.

During the second session, which was a logical continuation of the first one, there were considered prospects for Central Asian Region in the system of continental energy security in the light of observed new global financial-economic and energy tendencies.

At the round table an active exchange of views took place on further development of Central Asian energy potential, diversification of transportation routs from the region to world markets.

Special attention was also given to a strengthening tendency of enhancing technological and production capacity for shale gas extraction and supply, which is today considered as a possible promising hydrocarbon able to make significant changes into present oil and gas trade schemes, in particular, system of Eurasian continental shipments and global energy in whole.

An expert view on the round table’s agenda has contributed to elaboration of relevant conclusions and recommendations with regard to further development of regional and international mutually beneficial collaboration in oil and gas sector.
