On June 30, 2011 Tashkent
hosted the second session of the “Discussion club”. The event was organized by
the Center for Political Studies.
Discussion Club is a
platform for establishing a professional dialogue between foreign and Uzbek
experts, as it serves as a kind of basis for generating new views and ideas
that may influence the development of politico-economic school of Uzbekistan both
on theoretical and practical levels and promote it in wider global intellectual
space.
Current meeting of
the “Discussion club” was the theme of “Contemporary U.S. Foreign Policy in
Eurasia: the formation of new parameters or the preservation of traditional
approaches”.
The meeting gathered specially invited leading
international experts such as Andradnik
Migranyan who is the Head of the New York office of the Institute for
Democracy and Cooperation (USA), Irina
Isakova an independent expert on international affairs, a member of the
International Institute for Strategic Studies, Royal Institute of Defense
Studies and the “Chatham House” (UK), Mikhail Leontyev, journalist,
broadcaster, Editor in chief of journal “Odnako” (Russia), and senior
correspondent on international issues of the journal “The Sunday Indian” Saurab
Kumar Shahi.
The event was also
attended by representatives of ministries and agencies, universities,
scientific and analytical centers in Uzbekistan, as well as international
organizations and diplomatic corps accredited in Tashkent.
During the “Discussion
Club”, several issues related to the conceptual aspects of current American
politics - values, political and economic benchmarks, and key ideologies and
strategies have been discussed.
Moreover, experts
addressed such issues associated with the future of the Afghan mission, the
United States and the prospects of their policies after 2014, the impact of the
revision of U.S. policy in Afghanistan based on their strategic policy in
Central Asia as a whole and in the Greater Middle East
The fight against
international terrorism and the search for a new paradigm of NATO have been
also touched upon. A particular attention was paid to the so-called Chinese challenge
as a vector of the North Atlantic Alliance.
A separate place in
the agenda of “Discussion Club” was given to a block associated with problems
in the U.S. economy and its impact on Washington’s geopolitical strategy in
Eurasia and Central Asia in particular.
In addition, a fruitful polemics on the issues related to the wave of instability in the Middle East and North Africa, as well as possible adjustments of U.S. strategy towards the Muslim world has been discussed.
